RED ALERT™ Callistemon viminalis 'KPS38' PVR

  • Alternative to Photinia
  • Needs less pruning
  • Tolerates drought and frost

Description: Red Alert™ Callistemon is a compact, low maintenance and more drought tolerant alternative to Photinia. It has similar periods of red new growth when compared to Photinia.

It rarely, if ever, flowers and suffered very minor tip burn in Canberra, Australia. This means it will do well in climates like Christchurch.

Size: 2–2.4m high x 1.5–2m wide unpruned; 60cm–2m high x 50cm–1.5m wide pruned.

Uses: Hedge, specimen shrub.

Position: Full sun to part shade. Suits most soil conditions. Tolerates drought and frost. Thrives in windy situations.

Care: Water as required for 8-13 weeks until established. Plant in a well mulched garden (chunky mulch is recommended). If required use slow release fertiliser in spring. Prune to shape 1-3 times a year after red new growth (this depends on your requirements, more frequent pruning will provide a tidier hedge/shape).
